Epiphany

It’s Easter today, and I had an epiphany.

I am a sticker.  Nothing special.

Who gives a shit?  It’s just a sticker.”

Now I understand.

[Contemporary Street] Art is a Hammer – closing thoughts

To conclude my presentation today, a quote by Rainer Maria Rilke,

Ah, the knowledge of impermanence that haunts our days is their very fragrance.”

In like a lion.  Out like a lamb.

Thank you.

I own you.

Turn it off.

Hmm.  I’m flipping between Rachel Maddow and Slumdog Millionaire, two of my favorite digital visual narratives, among others.  They are related, you know.  As is everything.

Trojan Horse

Brilliant.  This is not a very good scan, but you get the idea.

[Contemporary Street] Art is a Hammer

For my talk at SLU, April 15, 2011:

[Contemporary Street] Art is a Hammer
The quote, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it,” has been attributed to playwright Bertolt Brecht and serves as the conceptual framework of my presentation on contemporary street art, and specifically political stickers from NYC and Berlin.  Based on these, I will discuss topics including individual freedoms, civil rights, war and terrorism, capitalism, the economy, and urban development, among others, using primary examples from my collection of over 3,000 original stickers gathered by hand from around the world since 2003.
